Engine generators with "overload protection"-- fatal flaw for ...

The landscape of solar sure has changed dramatically since I first hooked up a panel to a battery in ... even since I set up my current system in . Still, a quandary haunts me...

I need an engine generator to supplement the panels' output through the cloudy winters in upstate New York. At first I had a fine little watt Honda generator, which worked great. When it finally got to the end of its working life, I got the "new" watt Honda generator, which unfortunately had "overload protection," maybe a good thing for some people, but for me it meant: when I tried to charge my discharged battery bank, it decided something was wrong and shut itself off.

This led me to the conclusion: "Overload protection in an engine generator will not work for charging battery banks."

So again, I need an engine generator to supplement the solar array's output. A watt one would be fine, low noise would be good, and "overload protection" seems like the deal killer.

Any suggestions or insights? Thanks!

Generac overload protection?

Doesn't sound overloaded to me. But it DOES sound like it might be the only 240 volt load. Maybe wired wrong? I have a REAL hard time believing the motor was burned out by an overloaded set, as the motor can run fine down to 208 volts and even lower. By then not only would the generator be obviously struggling, it would probably shut down.

What kind of generator exactly? One of the home standby air cooled sets? 20kw would NOT be new as they haven't made those for 2-3 years. 22kw now.

The generator DOES incorporate overload protection. They have an output breaker for large currents, wiring faults, and also a DPE breaker internal to the set, and a thermal breaker in the windings, both work to protect the set from 'light' overloading as well as high ambient temperatures. The new ATS include load shed modules, however they don't work if they are not hooked up. None of these are intended to protect the loads, they protect the generator.

Maybe it was just that motors time to die?
