Do You Have Hard Water?
Hard water can cause scale build-up on the UV lamp which decreases the efficacy of the ultraviolet process. "Hard water" means the water coming into your home is high in calcium or magnesium. Hard water should be treated with a water softener before the water enters the UV chamber. If left untreated, these minerals can coat the quartz sleeve and impede the UV disinfection process.

Quality of Water Before the UV System
To keep a UV system functioning at peak performance, its important to know what contaminants are in your water before installing a UV water filter system. To understand what's in your water, refer to the Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) available from your water supplier July 1 each year. If you're on a private well water, we highly recommend testing your water. Learn more about water testing from the EPA website.
Because high levels of hardness, iron, and sediment may not allow the UV system to properly treat the water, we recommend the incoming water to the UV system meet the following parameters:
Hardness < 7 grains per gallon
Iron < 0.3 parts per million
Manganese < 0.05 parts per million
UVDF contains other products and information you need, so please check it out.
Turbidity < 1 NTU
Tannins < 0.1 parts per million
UV Transmittance > 75%
If your water does not meet the above parameters before entering the UV chamber, then pre-treatment equipment may be necessary.
Hello everyone! So, I got ich in my system once again after trying to go the full quarantine route. Did not work out, got sold a fish carrying ich and I worked it out with the vendor. Which leads me back to ich management road once again. I lost 3 fish now due to ich, and am looking into going UV sterilizer route for extra insurance. I will also be feeding a bit heavier with LRS food, white worms, and adding Selcon or Vita-chem into the mix.Now onto tank sizing. The tank water volume is around 120-140 from what it looks like. These are the two options I have at the moment, but would like your insight for other options. I understand two great brands would be Pentair and Aqua UV and I will be getting the recommended GPH flow rate for 90,000 µw/cm2 for the final choice sterilizer.THANKS!
