pickled and oiled steel question

When steel is made, it is rolled out hot, bright red to orange hot temps. This creates the scale on the surface. Pickling is an acid bath that removes the scale (iron oxide). However the now bare surface needs some protection so the mill applies a light oil film to protect against corrosion. Hot rolled pickled and oiled does not have as nice of surface finish as cold rolled.

Cold rolled can also have some light oil to help prevent corrosion. HR has a thickness limit, so thinner sheet, like typically used in car bodies for example, is CR. CR also has a nicer surface that is smoother with less pits.

About Hot Rolled Pickled and Oiled Steel

General exposure to oxygen in the air creates oxide layers (or scales), on the surface of the steel. The steel is dipped into tanks of hydrochloric acid, causing a complex reaction that almost removes this scaling entirely.

Prior to treatment, any surface particles such as dirt, dust, oil, rust, paint, tape or any other residues or substances require removal by alkaline, or other alternate cleaning methods. The primary advantage or purpose of the pickling and oiling conditioning is to reinforce the steel&#;s protective properties, in particular, rust.
