I am currently making an entry door for my home from Oak. I have milled all the rails and stiles to 1.75" thick and I now will begin to make the doors raised panels. I will be using a raised panel bit with my router table to create the panels for the door. My question is at what thickness should my panels be?

I have both 4/4 and 8/4 rough material. I would like to use the 4/4 material for the panels however I am thinking this will be way to thin for the door.
I was wondering if I milled two panels to 7/8 thickness and created my raised profile so that the tounge on the panel was 1/4 thick. Dado a 1/2 inch groove in the door and stack two raised panels back to back to fit in the 1/2 inch groove. Are there any reasons that I am not seeing as to why this might be a bad idea? My other option would be to laminate the two panels but I would like to bypass laminating if possible to save myself some time.
