Understanding the badminton lines someone can have two main benefits: playing better with a high win ratio and making your badminton court quickly. Your win ratio will increase as you better know the line rules that I will briefly discuss later and avoid losing points with minimum violation of Badminton rules. As lines are directly related to the badminton court size, you can have enough knowledge to make a good court. As the blog title focuses on badminton lines, I also mentioned lines about the racket, net, and shuttlecock. All the details are accurate as I got them from the Badminton World Federation and tried to explain them in an easy way. Lets draw some lines to avoid ignorance.
There are twelve lines in the court of badminton, and one line is below the badminton net. So the total number is thirteen. There are five pairs of lines, with each pair having two lines. Two lines are in a row that differentiate service courts. And one is between them, that is the badminton net line. Understand better with the Diagram.
I just mentioned the names of lines without differentiating singles and doubles, as I have explained to them below. For a better understanding, see the Diagram.
Knowing the dimensions of lines is very important because It gives you an idea of the size of the court and how a player has space to move, and you can even make it if you have a location.
1.2 The lines marking out the court shall be easily distinguishable and preferably be colored white or yellow. (BWF)
1.1 The court shall be a rectangle marked out with lines 40 mm wide. (BWF)
Badminton Lines have wildly varying length sizes. As you know, I mentioned five names of lines earlier, so lets explore the lengths of each.
Following are the lines for singles. You should take care of these lines if you are playing as singles.
The following lines are specific for players as they are playing doubles.
If you have noticed, these lines are selected differently for singles and doubles, making space wider for doubles and longer for singles.
The following lines are the same for singles and doubles without any difference.
The shuttlecock must land within these lines. The opposite team or player gets a point if shots land outside these lines.
The shuttlecock must land in the opposing service court before the service line. Failure to do so result in a point for the opponent.
Shots must land within these lines; otherwise, a point to the opponent.
The shuttlecock must pass this line. The opponent gets a point if you do not pass the shuttlecock.
In singles, it divides the court into left and eight service courts; in doubles, it serves as a reference for positioning.
The net should be of fine cord, having a dark color. The thickness of the mesh should be 15mm to 20mm.
The length of the badminton net should be 2 feet 6 inches.
The width of the badminton net for singles is 17 feet, and for doubles is 20 feet.
These are the two strong sticks; with their help, the net is hung.
The length of posts must be 5 feet 1 inch.
The diameter of the post should be 3 inches.
The racket frame is made of aluminum or graphite. Its strings should be made of nylon polyester. Its grip should be made with synthetic material, and the T-joint and shaft should be graphite or carbon fiber.
The length of the frame of the badminton racket should be 680mm.
The width of the frame should be 230mm.
A feathered shuttle has goose feathers, a cork base, and a leather covering. Synthetic Shuttlecock is made with a nylon plastic base.
The length of the shuttlecock should be 62mm to 70mm.
The base shall be 25 mm to 28 mm in diameter and rounded on the bottom.
Lets summarize what we have covered. Dont worry, Im not writing more. The summary is in the last image.

Reviewed by Adeel Adil. Former Vice President of Sports Society CUVAS.The Badminton World Federation has mentioned all the rules of badminton games including court size. I reached them and tried to explain them straightforwardly with illustrations that were missing there. I searched for them on their website but nothing was found. After scrolling through the results, I found these rules in the Pdf published by BWF. The unit used there was meters so I converted it into feet, inches, and centimeters. You can find them in the below table. Before making any delay lets know the accurate measurements of the badminton court in different units, especially in feet.
All measurements of the Badminton Court in Feet, Inches, centimeters and Meters
Tip: Dont Read all tables. Just look at the unit that you mostly use. The purpose of including other units is every type of reader can get results as he desires.
Lets know the dimensions of service court in singles and doubles.
Dimensions of Service Courts (singles) in feetThe length of service court for singles is 15.1 feet. The back boundary line also called the long service line is included in it. The width is 8.3 feet while the area is 125.3 square feet. Calculating the area of surface of the court is pretty simple. Just multiply the length and width. Anyway, I have multiplied it multiple times so you dont need it.
Dimensions of Service Courts (Doubles) in feetThe width of the service court for doubles is 9.6 feet as sidelines are included in it. Remember, Sidelines are not for singles and back boundaries and not for doubles. One reason for including sidelines for doubles may be that two players are on either side making for them wider area for easy play. The length of the service court is 12.7 ft. After multiplying 9.6 by 12.7 we get the area in square meters and that is 122 square feet.
Dimensions of short service line area in feetThe distance from the badminton net to the short service line is 6.5 feet and its length is 17 feet as the total width of the court for singles. The area is 111 square feet.
Dimensions of Back Boundary Lines area/Long service Line For Singles in FeetThe area of the long service line is 46 square feet. Its length is 20 feet and its width is 2.3 feet. It is wider than the sideline.
Dimensions of Sidelines area for doubles in feetAs I mentioned sidelines are only for doubles. The length of the sideline is 43.9 feet and the width is 1.4 feet. Its area is 61.5 square feet.it is narrower than the back boundary line.
Area of full court for singles in feetThe area of full court for singles is 746 square feet.
Area of Full Court For Doubles in FeetThe area of full court for doubles is 786 square feet.
Badminton Full Court Area in FeetThe length of the badminton court in feet is 43.9 and the width is 20ft. Making its area 878 feet.
Badminton court dimensions in InchesThe length of the badminton court in inches is 528 inches and the width is 240 inches. Making its area square inches.
Dimensions of a Badminton Court in CentimetersThe length of the badminton court in centimeters is centimeters and the width is 609 centimeters. Making its area square centimeters.
Dimensions of a Badminton Court in MetersThe length of the badminton court in meters is 13.4 and the width is 5.94 Making its area 79.6 square inches.
So far we have covered a lot of details about badminton courts. I also mentioned measurements of the badminton net in the table but did not write a word about it as I have written a detailed article about the width of the net and height of the badminton net. I missed mentioning important information about badminton court lines. Can you guess? Share the answer in the comment box. Dont forget to share my content as I wrote it after eight hours of struggle.
