There are various types of fences, so it is important to know which one best suits your needs. When a fence is galvanized there is extra protection applied to the steel to avoid the problematic rust that could develop otherwise.
Dig a hole approximately three feet by two feet, using the hole digger and a shovel. The general rule of thumb is that roughly 1/3 of the post should be in the soil.
Scatter rust inhibitor around the sector of the steel fence post that will be beneath the ground level.
Place the galvanized steel fence post in the hole. Determine the length of the post with the measuring tape to ensure that it is stable with the height of the other fence posts. You can also use a leveling tool. Add or reduce soil so as to raise or lower the post. Attach the terminal, or corner posts first when installing steel posts for the fence.
Run a line on one side of the terminal posts. Align the side of the line posts to handle the line from one side of the terminal posts so the fence will not be crimped.
Load the opening with about six inches of gravel around the fence posts. You can then fill the rest of the hole with some soil. Finally, push downwards so as to make it more compact using the flat edge of a sledgehammer. Add the soil in two to three-inch layers and use a level to ensure the posts are plumb between each coating.
Combine concrete with water in a wheelbarrow. Mix systematically with a shovel. Follow the instructions supplied with the concrete you purchased in order to mix it well.
Scoop the concrete into the gap around the steel fence. Work the concrete mix into the gravel with the cutting edge of the shovel.
Position the level on the side of the fence and verify that the post is plumb. Revolve the level around the steel fence post to make sure it is plumb on each side.
Strut the steel fence in position or hold it until the concrete has begun to rest and will grasp the fence without assistance. At that point, the fence posts should be securely and steadily fixed in the ground and your galvanized steel fence is ready.
